![]() and for it to be understood that yumeko is just This Particular Way is something she absolutely needs you can see it in the way she’s taken aback for a split second whenever someone actually shows a modicum of understanding for her. mary is one of the few people who has the capacity to understand the joy that yumeko gets from gambling and doesn’t have to question her in that regard. yumeko teaches mary that gambling is fun and playing together is tantamount to having their own language. Mary sees yumeko as she is: eccentricities notwithstanding, she’s just having fun. it’s also seriously worth noting that of these three, mary is the only one with whom we actually see that growth. ( slams my hands on my desk YUMARY CANON ) i think the only people who realize that yumeko isn’t some greedy temptress who acts only in her own interests are suzui, kirari, and mary. The juxtaposition of how other people perceive this interaction and what’s…actually happening, and what mary actually sees. That’s where panels like these come from: even characters like terano and sayaka – hell, ririka – project the image of a devil or demon or what-have-you onto yumeko because that’s how she exists in their perception. mary rejects the coddling that yumeko wouldn’t be able to give anyway, and in general she represents human ambition that yumeko strives to see and support.Īnd above all, mary is one in a very small handful of people that actually sees yumeko as she is. mary has overcome the wall of seeing yumeko as some sort of insurmountable force. we’ve already seen how yumeko galvanizes mary, we’ve seen mary talk about how she and yumeko seem like they’re in a world of their own as they “share secrets". Mary’s drive and need for independence suits this perfectly. she has priorities that supersede romance and thus dull the need for romantic affirmations that yumeko would struggle to provide. if somebody isn’t equipped for these things and tries to pursue her anyway they’re going to end up trying to date a stranger in the shell of a lover. this isn’t even for lack of feeling, it’s just that yumeko doesn’t have that wherewithal. ![]() they need to be prepared for someone whose love language is exclusively action and who probably won’t be saying the L-word first or for a long time. they need to be prepared to deal with her compulsions. but anyone who’d try to court her ( mary or not ) needs to be able handle her and her weird priorities. and if it’s your kind of thing i can see her even being moderately clingy. she’s affectionate, respects and supports without coddling, loves hugs and will kick you in the ass for stagnating. Yumeko would be a fantastic girlfriend and i’m gonna die on that hill. it’s hard to picture her doing these things both because of her eccentricities and because she’s just straight lacking the conditioning to normalize those concepts. i said on twitter once that yumeko is best suited to companionship with romantic intent more than she is the picturesque “going-steady” with dinner dates and movies and engagement and marriage. Yumeko is… put as concisely as possible, she’s weird. she has several eccentricities that are antithetical to concepts like commitment unless the other party is very willing to work with her or just naturally have a personality that complements her tendencies. This is what makes them work so well though, be it as friends or romantic partners. mary has goals that she is working towards, whereas yumeko lives solely in the moment and while she may or may not have her own agenda, the narrative just refuses to clue us as the audience into it. she’s determined to be self-sufficient and self-sustaining and she gambles for the most part to facilitate that. ![]() mary is very methodical, deliberate and driven. I think that’s ultimately where their similarities end though. chapter 70 is essentially mary’s entire inner monologue where she admits to thinking about yumeko all the timeand talks about how she is determined to be her equal. ![]() Likewise, mary respects yumeko to the point of feeling inferior to her for a brief stint. like yumeko, mary is an extraordinary gambler and yumeko vastly respects her and her skill and that fact shines in their interactions. even when mary first loses to yumeko in the pilot, and then to yuriko later, you really see her bounce back during the debt swap and nim type zero. Yumeko and mary are similar in terms of their aptitude in gambling they both know how to read people, they know how to tell different shuffles apart, and in general they have a lot of the same technical skillset. First of all, thanks for coming into my home and being like “ok vivi talk about yumary” because i absolutely will do it.
